Nicolas Jaar, Space is Only Noise
2011 | Label: Circus Company / Believe Digital

Nicolas Jaar is a full-time student at Brown, head of the up-and-coming Clown & Sunset label, and, oh yeah, creator of 2011′s most rapturously acclaimed American electronic-dance debut. Space Is Only Noise is all over the place stylistically, which is probably one reason it’s gone so far beyond dance audiences. (That, and electronic music is reaching out more widely than it has before.) It’s moody more than anything else, partly because of Jaar’s brooding (and… read more »

It really only is noise...

I wanted to like this album. It has promise. But, like KEVBOB said, it feels like a student exploring the space, looking for his sound. It's got a sense of adventure and playfulness that I appreciate, but I think I'll wait until his second or third album before I commit to this artist.

I was disappointed in this album. There are a few good songs here, the first and second particularly, but the rest get bozo on me. The beats in particular seem student grade. They lack complexity. I was looking for more melancholy here (like the cover), but I kept getting a Bozo vibe in the voices and in the jumping from style to style. I'll give it a few more chances to win me, but... I'm not thinking it's gonna happen.

Six Degrees of Nicolas Jaar’s Space Is Only Noise

By Philip Sherburne, Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »

Why Dance Music is Bigger than Ever

By Michelangelo Matos, Contributor

In 2010, the unthinkable occurred. I was 35, and I had never been so excited about electronic dance music. That's not usually how it works - dance music's turnover rate often leads to early burnout even among diehards, and particularly among diehards over 30. But throughout the past half-decade, dance music has been both cutting-edge and conscious of its own legacy; an irresistible combination for anyone who wants to have a good time first and… more »
