Tasty funk/lounge...mellow and mood-altering.
Let's start with the positive: a few tracks here combine interesting vocals or instrumentals with creatively assembled riffs, percussion and beats to good effect. Unfortunately the rest, while they may share the same starting materials, are rather more base metal than gold. Some are murdered by dire solos that never rise above beginner-level noodlings up and down a scale with little harmonic or rhythmic intelligence and no sense of saying anything; the rest just expire for lack of interest, fading in, hanging around for a while then fading out again without ever going anywhere or leaving any impression. I tried to like this, I really did, but the unfortunate truth is that even at their best Ocote Soul Sounds and Adrian Quesada only get half way to achieving the kind of drama, tension, contrast and dare I say it, soul, that an outfit like the Cinematic Orchestra can deliver; alchemy of any kind is sadly lacking. Get tracks 4 - 7 if you really must, but leave the rest in peace.
