Formed in 1967 and disbanded in 1985, Super Mazembe formed near the Zambian border of southern Congo, but they made their deepest imprint in Kenya when they moved to Nairobi in the '70s. The dense weave of Congolese soukous is leavened by the nervy jump of Kenyan benga, and the guitarists Loboko Bua Mangala, Komba Kassongo Songoley and soloist Bukasa wa Bukasa “Bukalos” favored clean, almost delicately articulated lines that were melodically straightforward but, on this sharp collection, seldom merely ordinary.
