I've been listening to this band for a long time and I love this live recording with an orchestra. Saw them live when Colin Walcott was still with them and took the audiance to another place!! This live recording is a great reminder of that night?

One of Oregon's deepest pleasures is hearing the many ways Ralph Towner's compositions manifest themselves. Icarus is the finest example: first performed with the Paul Winter Consort, followed by (among others) Oregon, solo guitar/piano, duet with Gary Burton, and here, with full orchestra bringing out its soaring melody. The orchestra also complements the delicate brooding Beneath an Evening Sky, and brings out the already Russian intensity of Anthem. It all reveals the reality that, while Ralph Towner *plays* jazz, his true identity is one of the most important contemporary classical composers. If you came to Oregon looking for jazz, I suggest starting with Live at Yoshi's. If the rest of this review sounds interesting, you won't regret this. BTW, while improv is a distinctive part of the Towner/Oregon experience, I'm not wild about the piece here...although interesting to hear an entire orchestra improvise....

always quality music

This is only my second Oregon album and I really like this too. The other, 'North West Passage' is remarkable contempory Jazz/other album but isn't on eMusic. Oregon produce quality enjoyable music that may be too refelctive or laid back for some. I'll probably get the other album anyway!
