Get on the Night Train

FlashRetro

Recorded in 1962, Night Train by The Oscar Peterson Trio (OPT), the muscular and melodic pianist Peterson, possibly the greatest upright bass player ever, Mr Ray Brown, and the too-often overlooked drum and percussion journeyman Mr Ed Thigpen, established itself almost immediately as a classic. As with all great three piece combos, be it jazz, pop, rock, or whatever, the OPT sound is greater than the sum of its parts. This album is an excellent demonstration of how an album can be fundamental and progressive at the same time, with roots deep in the classic jazz tradition and sounding contemporary and relevant these many decades later. An absolute jazz essential.
