A tremendous performance of perhaps the most famous symphony ever composed.
2004 | Label: BIS

The Fifth Symphony is probably the most famous symphony ever composed: indeed its opening bars are probably the most famous introduction to any classical composition. Like a coiled spring, this is a work whose power is generated by its concentration: little motives suddenly emerge from the texture, strangely familiar but also possessing a rich life of their own. Apart from the extraordinary first movement, the most arresting moment in this concentrated work is the transition from the third to the fourth movement. Beethoven creates a sense of anticipation that builds and builds until the finale literally bursts upon us. It's no wonder then that the ending is drawn out to the point of parody, but taken together this is a thrilling journey that Osma Vänskä and his Minnesota orchestra captures the work's drama and originality like few recent interpretations. The coupling is a tremendous performance of the longer Fourth Symphony.

Just when you thought we'd exhausted the 5th...

Thucydides

There are so many recordings of the 5th available that whenever I see a new one, I ask myself, "Is one more recording really necessary?" This one is. Vanska provides an exceptionally clear and vigorous interpretation of the symphony, making full use of the dynamic range of digital recordings make the symphony feel like it bursts out of the speakers.

No nonsense performance

yerik

As with Lahti and Sibelius, Osmo Vänskä performs his job as conductor masterfully. He makes the orchestra play the notes the way the are written on the sheets, no more no less. And that is enough. The best "Fifth" I have ever heard! This Beethoven 1-9 deserves the status of "reference recordings".

Excellent--but....

beethovenmozartbrahmsschubertetc

The Vanska/Minnesota Beethoven Symphonies are in my opinion excellent except that some of the soft passages, especially with the first violins, are TOO soft--nearly inaudible. Of the dozens of other Beethoven conductors that I have heard, none does it this way, and I doubt that Beethoven would have wanted this exaggerated softness. (By the way, the unwanted break in sound between the 3rd and 4th movements of the Fifth Symphony referred to by one of the other reviewers does not exist with the more recent generations of iPod.)

excellent performance

chiccy

This is a wonderful performance- strong, clean, decisive and always holds your attention. Vanska is one of the few conductors around who seems to be able to galvanise orchestras into producing their very best. At any price it would be worth hearing but at this price you would have to be daft not to download it. You won't be disappointed!

Overall very good, not special though

SpinyNorman

This coupling is the first in Vanska’s Beethoven cycle, and also the debut for both Vanska and BIS in Minneapolis. Whilst the orchestral playing has been maintained at a very high level, we are unconvinced that there is anything particularly special here (as has been claimed in one or two places) - at least, certainly not in the fourth, which, if not distinctive, is most listenable. The fifth is more positive and makes a fine modern version, being characterful without any obvious interpretative tricks. Both symphonies are finely played, but we would hardly describe these readings as incandescent. The sound is very good, although later issues in this cycle show that the BIS engineers were still finding their feet in this one; nevertheless, the recording is eminently clear and well-balanced.

Beware, track break!!

philb

First, these are wonderful performances - this orchestra is already operating at a very high level. BUT, downloading causes a track break between the 3rd and 4th movements of the Fifth Symphony- exactly where the great climax is reached!! So be prepared for "climaxus interruptus" - such a shame for an interpretation as fine as this is.
