A great performance of a classic work.
2006 | Label: BIS

Again from Osma Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra, here's the crowning glory of Beethoven's symphonic achievement, a huge 80-minute creation that culminates in the first use of voices in a symphony. Again, this is a thrilling journey, from the mists of the opening where the strings dart about to the moment when the soloists, orchestra and chorus join together in a call for universal brotherhood. The rhythmic vitality of the Choral Symphony — the second movement in particular — is offset by the almost operatic sweep of the finale, itself making all the more impact for the poised, timelessness of the slow third movement. From here, the trajectory to Mahler's vast world-embracing symphonic structures is easily traced, but Beethoven got there first and with a concentration and depth of expression that still astounds today.

Downloading track 4 (4th movement)

thebigm

The eMusic Download Manager appears to be having trouble with the link or track name (at least on Mac), but temporarily disabling the Download Manager and clicking Retry to download track 4 manually works fine for me. Hope that helps others! eMusic, please fix the DM!

EMUSIC-02444D5C

btw - vanska's beethoven series is genius! I had no problem downloading the 4th movement but needed to change the file name to import into itunes as it is too long... just delete part of the file name... this should work even prior to downloading

Turn it Up!!

Nice performance but the mix is really quiet compared to other versions. I recommend Philippe Herreweghe's version over this one.

My pick

Beethoven's Ninth is a work I've managed to collect; I must have half a dozen different versions on disc, at least. It's worth comparing how different conductors interpret the work, but for me, this is the one I come back to again and again. Vanska's entire sympony cycle is incredible (and I highly recommend moving on to his Sibelius interpretations), but this is a crowning jewel. You owe it to yourself to check this out.

Superb, artistically and sonically

This presentation of Beethoven's 9th is an exceptional modern recording: sonically robust, and nuanced and ferocious in its presentation. Hat tip to Vanska, whose scholarship and artistry with regard to this work are obvious and appreciated. Am looking forward to more from this conductor and this orchestra.

Captivating

This is one of the best albums you can get. That is because Beehoven was the best composer of his time and he is still one of the best in history, including today.

A Beginner's Beethoven

By James Jolly, eMusic Contributor

When people talk about the great classical composers, three names inevitably crop up: Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Bach, the great composer of unshakable Protestant faith, a master of form whose music embraces the sublime; Mozart, the great portrayer of the human condition, the master of perfection whose music caresses our hearts and souls; and Beethoven, the first great Romantic, the man whose music grapples with Destiny. The life of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) spanned the turn… more »

Joyous Classical

By James Jolly, eMusic Contributor

Joy. It's amazing that a tiny, three-letter word can convey a range of emotions that takes books, volumes even, to explain. It's an emotion that infuses our lives from start to end, from the first glimpse of recognition between a baby and its mother, the mastering of a new skill, the joy of achievement, the joy of first love, the joy of discovering music... the list goes on, ending perhaps in the joy of satisfaction… more »
