More than any single record, Oval's 94diskont popularized "glitch music." As digital recording and storage became commonplace and endless perfect copies of music were possible, a fetish developed in electronic music circles around the sound of computer mistakes, and much of the hubbub can be traced directly to Oval. The centerpiece of this record is the 24-minute "Do While," which combines warm, lunging drones, swells of distortion subjected to disorienting phase effects and the gentle lull of a skipping CD that's become stuck in time. Even over its extreme length, "Do While" is never boring, as subtle variations create a sense of crude unpredictability and the profound surface beauty bumps against tense layers of noise. Of the shorter tracks, highlights include "Line Extension," which, with its heavy use of feedback and meandering organ chords, points to the noisier direction Oval would later pursue, and "Cross Selling," which overlaps a series of fluttering electronic tones to create a unified cluster of nervous, twitching sound. The Oval signature of a skipping CD as rhythmic device had been around since their 1993 debut Wohnton, but with 94diskont the group most fully realized the emotional possibilities of damaged ambient music.

Really great stuff. I'm presently obsessed with 'Shop In Store,' the most breathtaking and beautiful piece of music I've heard, electronic or otherwise, in far too long.

leaves you bored and searching for the answer why this garbage was actually produced. Sounds like a scratchy record skipping over and over. I think there are a few chopped up fart samples if that is your bag.

I remember listening to this many years ago, and I was finally able to revisit that experience, thanks to the album being available here. Just as powerful as I remembered, and then some. I would consider this essential to any electronic music collection!

Aphex Twin played on broken CDs. An unforgettable experience, especially "Do While," a 24+ minute opus of repeated notes and whirs and clicks that absolutely mesmerizes me.

94 Diskont is undoubtedly a standout in the field of electronically advanced, glitch-heavy music. In addition to having clear resonance with those primarily interested in process, this record resides in an autonomous and highly aesthetic sonic universe, where bits of production and granulated noise easily melt into warm, repetitive arrangements. 94 Diskont was made with a lot of productive mediation and gadgetry, but the seams don’t show. The textures are thick and the melodies are challenging, nowhere more so than on the epic opening track “Do While.” At 24 minutes, Oval take their time, but this is deep listening, and anything shorter just wouldn’t do. A distant and fractured bell sound competes with a decaying, four-note organ swell for the majority of the song, while clicks and unidentified manipulations make their way in and out of the mix. Rhythm and melody emerge from unexpected places. What you initially take to be white noise settles into an odd but discernible pattern. The clicks between a skipping CD become an essential part of “Shop in Store.” But perhaps even more impressive is when rhythm and melody barely emerge at all.
