a damn good story

wherewithology

As far as I can tell this album is about Lewis, who is some guy in a magical land (Spectrum?) being controlled by Owen Pallet. Whatever. With or without a story to back them up, these songs are incredible. Lewis Takes Action is obviously the standout single, but the others are great as well, from the creepingly sinister Oh Heartland, Up Yours! to the transcendentally defiant Lewis Takes Off His Shirt, which gets me singing along every time. The orchestral qualities of this album are interesting, while the lyrics are pleasantly and distinctly unsettling. I just wish I had the liner notes so I could maybe figure out what on earth in going on.

Stop posting "it's not available in my country"

mikemos

It's not available there because the record label thinks Canuks will go to the record shop and fork over more $$$ to get this. Go take it up with them.

Owen Pallett Talks Eno, Music Critics and Film Scores

By Margaret Wappler, Contributor

Owen Pallett has slept in his own bed only four nights this year. The rest of the time, he's been on tour with Arcade Fire, the runaway train from Montreal that released its fourth album, Reflektor, late last year. Pallett, who wrote the album's string arrangements, is one of that band's secret weapons, a musical polyglot who can translate a loose musical idea into a full-fledged composition. Richard Reed Parry, AF's multi-instrumentalist, said that Pallett… more »

Who Is…Marques Toliver

By Barry Walters, Contributor

If Marques Toliver comes across a bit brash, it's because there's little precedent for him. Both a classical violinist and R&B singer-songwriter, this 26-year-old world traveler boasts talents too big and broad to fit into any one box. On his stunning London-recorded Bella Union debut album Land of CanAan, Toliver combines literary and historical influences — among them, Frederick Douglass and James Baldwin — with music that ably blends an unlikely combination of Bach,… more »
