From ambient to glorious…and just 450 years ahead of its time
Label: Naxos

Not many masterworks are written as a challenge, but that was the genesis of "Spem in Alium," composed for 40 voices (eight choirs of five — sort of early surround sound), and still one of the greatest achievements of English music. Clocking in over 12 minutes, it builds from shy ambience to orgasmic, melodic majesty before slowly falling back into the distance. Revolutionary when first performed, it's still music to take the breath away, graceful, elegiac, and as timeless as all great art. The rest of the music here is delicious, but "Spem in Alium" does that rarest thing — it touches the sublime.

Beauty in sound

Naxos, the Oford camerata and Jeremy Summerly introduced me to early music. And their sound works so well - it is easy to get lost in this peice, and just let the harmonies take you away to a better place. wonderful.

I'm not sure how I stumbled on this album nor am I sure how I was convinced to spend my precious tracks on music that is so different from what I normally listen to. But, without a doubt, this is my favorite musical find of the year. I had to wikipedia "Tallis" to learn more about what has been constantly playing on my computer every day since it was purchased. I still don't understand it, or the affect it has on me. For one, I love to listen to it when I'm working. It's a perfect companion for mental tasks. Instead of getting in the way, it helps me to focus. It's also completely soothing, without lulling you to sleep. Give it a try!

Not that pleasing

Though technically awesome and complex and mind boggling, Spem in Alium is a 12 minute slog. It comes across as being a little self indulgent and a touch show-offy. I am a big fan of choral music but after 8 minutes I just thought, enough already and promptly deleted the download from my library.

definitely worth a listen

In my opinion Tallis' spem in alium is the finest choral piece ever written! It is unusual in its use of 40 part imitation by eight choirs of five parts each. This makes for a tremendously lush almost magical sound. It is a must for any serious lover of choral music and/or early music. Well performed here. Download it!!!

The Tallis here is perhaps the highlight of this disc; it's a 40-part motet, one of only two such in existance. In most performances, each choir member has his or her own part. Sonically, this is a huge piece--worth a listen.
