This is the best Patricia Barber album IMHO. Café Blue was a big disappointment.
I like the work of this young lady. Obviously she's been influenced greatly by that Great among Greats, Shirley Horne. She has to learn to flex her voice a little bit more at just the right time in with the right amount of inflexion; but, that'll come with time and experience. I like to see her triumph; she's got something to offer.
This is a fine collection of torchy ballads with barebones piano-trio backing. Barber is a fine singer and an excellent pianist, but I do wish the mood varied a little more. The highlight is a great moody version of "A Man and a Woman," the one time that Barber and crew shift the mood and tempo a little.
A moody, somewhat torchy, but very enjoyable set. Vocalist/pianist Patricia Barber is accompanied by Marc Johnson or Michael Arnopol on bass, and Adam Cruz or Adam Nussbaum on drums.
