Kisses on the Bottom

EMUSIC-00B556F9

Beautifully crafted collection of standards. McCartney shows real love and respect for the classic songs which he was heavily influenced by while growing up in post WW II Liverpool. His vocals are gorgeous, clear and sensitive. "Inchworm", one of my favorites, is sweet and sparsely orchestrated. I don't agree that Paul has run out of ideas, ("My Valentine" is strong and lovely), he's just paying homage to some of his roots, with a modern sensibility. Lennon and McCartney were just as indebted to the writers of these songs as they were to Little Richard and Elvis.

He's singing his eulogy...

nicknpdx

Well, now we know what Paul would be doing after he turned 64 .... singing songs his age. I must admit, as a devoted fan since 1964, Paul has pretty much written total crap the past 12 years, so this is a nice breath of fresh air. If you've run out of great writing ideas, it's best to sing someone else's. Perhaps it will re-inspire him to write a few great songs we've been accustomed to before he led off to pasture.

OK! Are you guys ready to get bummed out? Because it's the week before Valentine's Day and, man, do we have some sad records for you. I mean, sad even for indie rock, which has sad basically branded into its DNA. So if you're ready to be heartbroken, let's get going. Sharon Van Etten, Tramp: Basically, the only record you need today. A great leap forward from her previous, folky outings, Tramp finds Van Etten falling… more »

The Fireman:Sir Paul Speaks

By Mat Snow, eMusic Contributor

Electric Arguments is no ordinary Paul McCartney album. For a start, it's by the Fireman, his occasional musical partnership with Youth, former Killing Joke bassist turned award-winning producer. Secondly, it's received more critical acclaim than any Macca release since Band on the Run a trifling 35 years ago. Oh, and it released on an indie record label founded by anarchist punks, One Little Indian, whose most high-profile artist up until now has been Björk. Fitting, then,… more »
