Strange Combo - Great Music

peterphillips85

I've always loved Pete Seeger and his simple folk. Upon first listen some may say it sounds like children's music but it's always light, fun, and meaningful. On this album he's paired with a number of different choral groups which makes for a rather strange, but appealing sound. There's just something altogether glorious about hearing Pete's voice ring out amongst a crowd of many. I think the formula falls short on a few songs (Kisses Sweeter Than Wine, Garbage) but all in all this is a rare treat for Pete Seeger fans and lovers of folk in general.

Oh, Pete - I love you and your music

How can I describe the way I feel when I hear Pete Seeger's voice? He is rich with the past, a complete history of music and our country. When I hear him sing I can see great crowds of protesters and beautiful forests and boats on rivers. He is a link with the very roots of American music, and the world will be a very empty place when we no longer have him in our midst. I prefer the tracks without the shmaltzy glee-club chorus backup singers; my favorites on this disk are Sailing Down this Golden River, Kisses Sweeter than Wine, and my all time fave, How Can I keep From Singing. The whole CD deserves a listen, and if you aren't already familiar with Pete, please learn more about him as soon as you can.

They Say All Music Guide

Having long since decided to give up recording, Pete Seeger was coaxed into making a new album (his first in 17 years) by Paul Winter, who co-produced this 18-track, nearly 64-minute collection and recorded it at his studio. Winter’s approach was to have Seeger sing his usual repertoire, accompanied on most of the tracks by one of three choruses: the 30-member Gaudeamus, the Union Baptist Church Singers, or the Cathedral Singers. The result is like a Pete Seeger concert in which the audience sings along with much better harmony, but in a much more formal manner than usual. There are three songs previously unrecorded by the artist, including a tribute to Lead Belly, but the other 15 are familiar songs such as “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine” and “The Water Is Wide.” “Singing an old song is an act of reaffirmation,” he writes in the CD booklet. But recording a bunch of them makes this album more a coda to Seeger’s recording career than another milestone. – William Ruhlmann
