Groovy Moog!

scrubbles.net

Brief but enjoyable sampler from synth pioneers Gershon Kingley and Jean-Jacques Perrey. Fun, playful, kitschy music that never takes itself too seriously - the last thing you'd expect from a couple of French computer nerds. The spacey and oft sampled "E.V.A." sounds as if it came from a lost party scene from "Barbarella", and the melody of "Baroque Hoedown" never ceases to amaze me (no wonder Disney appropiated it for their Main Street Electrical Parade). Incidentally, "E.V.A.", "Passport to the Future" and "Island Space" come from Perrey's early solo albums - but they fit right in with the P&K stuff.

The budget Vanguard Visionaries collection is a very compact (and, at ten tracks, it borders on microscopic) introduction to the weird sonic playground of electronic music pioneers Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley. The duo’s most ubiquitous output is here (“Swan’s Splashdown,” “One Note Samba — Spanish Flea,” and “The Unidentified Flying Object”), but folks already hooked by the charm and creativity of those tracks should look to the much more thorough The Essential Perrey & Kingsley (also on Vanguard) to get their bleep-and-bloop fix. – J.
