Pete And The Pirates, One Thousand Pictures
2011 | Label: Stolen Recordings / PIAS Digital

[As part of his eMusic Takeover, BBC DJ and indie taste-making legend Steve Lamacq chose five records for us to feature as Review of the Day. Here's what he had to say about Pete & The Pirates' One Thousand Pictures.]

Pete & the Pirates are a great band, but they aren’t a fashionable band; they’re just a band of blokes that are quite good at making music. How would you sell them to a TV or radio station? “They make good songs?”

I like bands who are clever lyrically, because rock ‘n’ roll gets to that point where there are no new equations left. But you can still make something which is really interesting lyrically, and I think Tom [Sanders] creates these little postcard vignettes of things in his head. They are these amazing images. Amazing!

What an incredible album! So many good songs. I'm older now but this album excites me the same way albums did when I first heard them in high school. I occasionally come back to this artist page hoping to find there's another batch of songs available by Pete & the Pirates.

I think every song on this album is a gem. Judging from earlier PatP and Tap Tap, Tom Sanders is a once-a-generation talent. 2old2Pogo is right, though. This stuff might be just a bit too erudite for customers looking for a "descent [sic] single". (Although "Back to the Bar," "Cold Black Kitty," and especially "Half Moon Street" have all gotten heavy play on BBC 6 Music.) As an American, I also acknowledge that they're way to English to ever succeed with US audiences. "Little Death" hasn't even been released over here yet.

PatP's first album completely got me, and this one got me as well. Can't stop listening to this - go try this if you love the LA's!
