Best Album from a Great Singer-Songwriter

jackbugs

Despite being Bob Dylan's son-in-law, Peter Himmelman is one of the most underappreciated singer-songwriters around, and this is arguably his greatest album, full of inspiring, thoughtful and catchy songs. "Woman with the Strength of 10,000 Men" is absolutely a highlight, as is "Mission of My Soul", but there are so many other great tunes here: "Only Innocent", "Impermanent Things", "Love of Midnight", "Crushed", and a lovely duet with Karen Peris of The Innocence Mission, "Running Away". This is one of my favorite albums of the 90's, and if you haven't heard it, please give it a listen.

They Say All Music Guide

From Strength to Strength is the fourth album for Minnesota’s folk-rocker Peter Himmelman and his first for Epic Records. Produced by Himmelman and featuring his long-time backing band, he delivers an album full of acoustic-based adult rock with harmonica, organ and violin giving it a typically earthy vibe. The highlight of the record is “Woman with the Strength of 10,000 Men,” a stirring song about the perseverance of a paralyzed woman. The track managed to garner a bit of play at adult alternative stations. There’s a lot more to appreciate on this solid record which is anchored by strong songwriting by Himmelman which often has spiritual overtones like the gently resilient lyric and melody of “This Too Shall Pass” and the lovely song of devotion “Mission Of My Soul.” Insistent and intelligent, From Strength To Strength is worthwhile listening for those who like a little kick to the gray matter. – Tom Demalon
