Relaxing but not Boring

BeckoningChasm

Peter Michael Hamel plays the pipe organ in quite relaxing, slowly progressing works. The tapestries he weaves are quite interesting and involving, not the usual sleepy-time stuff one might expect. Every now and then, he blows through a conch shell, making a loud clarion call like a trumpet. This music is perfect for doing creative work. It stimulates thought without swamping it in any wrong (too busy, too dull) direction. Recommended if you suffer from writer's or painter's block, but it's good enough to listen to simply on its own.

They Say All Music Guide

Hamel’s contemporary interpretation of the medieval musical concept known as “organum” involved an intricate interplay of modal melodies. These four extended works on pipe organ culminate in acutely intense barrages of sound and sensation. This is a challenging album. – Linda Kohanov
