They Say All Music Guide

Pham Duc Thanh is one of the best musicians of Vietnamese traditional music. He is now living in Montréal, Canada. At the age of six, he already played the dàn bau, the dàn tranh, and the dan nhi. He even created his own version of the dàn bau that is called the dàn bau go, which he plays on the CD. He is also a student of Professor Trân Van Lhê. He is accompanied by his wife Liê Nguyêt Lan, a singer in modern and traditional Vietnamese singing. Vietnamese music has many influences, but mainly from China in North and in the West all the way to India. These influences allowed the creation of a rich diversity of music styles. These styles are currently divided between the northern, central, and southern regions. The multi-instrumentalist Duc Thanh offers a wide range of styles from these different regions, as well as theater or storytelling songs, including one that clearly shows a Chinese influence. The charm of Vietnam in all its diversity. – Bruno Deschênes
