Epic drum line

fontmaven

One of rock's great drummers, Phil packed this disc edge-to-edge with tender ballads, shiny Motown-infused brassy pop, one of the best Beatles covers EVER, and of course, the eminent "In the Air Tonight," with its pop-culture mythology (Was his wife the victim of a crime? Is Phil taunting the perpetrator?). Shockingly, there's a smooth-jazz reworking of Phil's own version of the song that excises the ten-beat drum bridge that everyone waits for. Can't imagine Phil gave his blessing to that. . .

BEST Phil Solo - and the 1st

jerry.racioppi

Phil's rendition of "Tomorrow Never Knows" on this album is AMAZING - MASTERFUL - So Cool - I think Lennon and McCartney would be proud. In the Air Tonight - Overplayed on Radio for years but who cares? Turn it on Again, I'll listen! Phil's best work is always his orig stuff and this one is LOADED with it.

In the air tonight is its own legacy. Its worth every download it costs and the rest of the album is a super bonus

Great Album...

"In The Air Tonight" is a true epic. Another notable song is his overly ignored cover of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows".

already own this, but haven't listned for a long time, listening to these samples reminds me of what a tremendous disc this is, not a bad track on here, if you don't know pcollins between prog/rock/genesis and pop rock/collins, you might be very surprised at the quality of this one WOW

Six Degrees of the Foo Fighters’ The Colour and the Shape

By Andy Beta, Contributor

It used to be easier to pretend that an album was its own perfectly self-contained artifact. The great records certainly feel that way. But albums are more permeable than solid, their motivations, executions and inspirations informed by, and often stolen from, their peers and forbearers. It all sounds awfully formal, but it's not. It's the very nature of music — of art, even. The Six Degrees features examine the relationships between classic records and five… more »

Collins proves himself a passionate singer (and distinctive drummer) with a gift for both deeply felt ballads and snarling rockers. His debut album transformed him from the frontman of Genesis to a solo star who happened to be in Genesis, too. Contains “In the Air Tonight” and “I Missed Again.” – William Ruhlmann
