I waited for this one for more than a decade, being a huge fan of Photek's earlier work on Modus Operandi and especially the epic Ni Ten Ichi Ryu. I pre-ordered this album with high hopes! I must confess to being underwhelmed on my first listen. Parkes' trademark crystal clear production is almost too perfect, too clinical here. I felt the sound could have done with a little more scruffy warmth. Few of the tracks really grabbed me. And I longed for more intricate drum patterns as were standard in earlier works. But repeat listens revealed intricacy and depth on a more subtle level. Rhythmic ideas are indeed there, but the emphasis has moved away from purely drum wizardry to encompass the whole track. This is a Rupert Parkes who has taken time he used to dedicate to percussion programming and used it to develop his skills with texture, melody and structure.
