Dutch Courage
Those who have followed this Dutch singer-songwriter's career from the very beginning, know that Pien Feith has never shyed away from experiment. On her first full-length, the dissonant guitars that dominated her earlier work, are largely absent. In the past she was often compared to Cat Power and, to a lesser degree, PJ Harvey. It is unlikely such names will come to mind when one listens to Dance On Time. Feith has traded in her guitar for electronic beats and synths, taking on a new approach to songwriting that steers clear from any assocation one might have with the term "singer-songwriter". There is nothing traditional about this record. Still, Feith's beautiful, instantly recognizable voice and her talent for coming up with unusual, but tantalizing melodies, give this album a familiar feel. Dance On Time is a coherent piece of work that is both original and accessible. It certainly is one of the best things to come out of Holland for a long time.
