Enjoyable, but...

Battle for the Sun is an interesting album, though if your first introduction to the band is from the moody remake of Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill, you may be in for a surprise. Most of the tracks aren't instantly likable, generally speaking, though they do grow on you with repeated listening. 'Come Undone' begins as a great track, though it quickly gets lost in too much unsubtle guitar work mid-way. It is also not a remake of the Duran Duran track of the same name.

Kills

Plain and simple, Battle for the Sun kills. Love it!

Just plain sucks. Total Wanna-be Suede.

Mime

At least they were honest in their name- Placebo is right. Empty lyrics, thin and weak vocals... Even Kill Hannah is better than this. For real music, check out Suede aka London Suede, that's what they're TRYING to emulate.

musical power

Placebo is one of the most influetial bands the mainstream hasn't heard of. This new album will not dissapoint. It is intense. However the linier song writing will throw off some. If you want more pop in your dark power pop try one of their other ones. But if you want creative changes and exploading guitars this is your dog.

They Say All Music Guide

Battle for the Sun, Placebo’s sixth album, is given a steel-reinforced production by David Bottrill but the band remains resolutely pitched toward a niche audience. The increased care spent on the sound of Battle for the Sun emphasizes how the band’s sound — an extension of ’80s goth, right down to its reflected love of ’70s Bowie, but never unfriendly to any passing electronic fad — is never quite hooky, nor does it have a rock kick. Everything about Battle for the Sun is coloring for the group’s disaffected stance, not so much stylish but terminally out of time, alienation preserved in amber for those few who understand. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
