If nothing else, try Blue Plate Special. A very good album, their other album is as good if not better.

Superb if little known album

Platypus was a side project (or if you like "supergroup") involving members of King's X, Dream Theater and the Dixie Dregs. (If you like any of the above you'll like this album). The band later became the Jelly Jam (same band minus Derek Sherinian, also *very good*). This first album is quite varied, but I find myself coming back to it often - outstanding musicianship (Ty Tabor on guitar and Derek Sherinian on keyboards stand out)and strong compositions, about half of them instrumental. It's one of the very best albums no-one's heard of and has become one of my all-time favorites. The opening track I find a bit predictable, the others I still like after a lot of listens. I think this is one of the best albums on this site.

They Say All Music Guide

This side project of Kings X guitarist Ty Tabor has potential for greatness. Surrounded by stellar band members — Rod Morgenstein (former Dregs drummer), Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater keyboardist) and John Myung (Dream Theater bassist) — this debut effort rocks. Combining elements of the Beatles, Kansas, Deep Purple and the Dregs, Platypus puts forth some of the most satisfying melodic rock to come out in a long while. Tracks such as “Standing in Line,” “Rock Balls/Destination Unknown,” “Platt Opus” and “Willie Brown” will satisfy the fusion rock purists. “I’m With You,” “Nothing to Say” and “Bye Bye” are tasty ballads. Platypus is a talented band that surely won’t become extinct for some time. – Joseph R. Scotti
