POLIÇA, Give You The Ghost
2011 | Label: Totally Gross National Product / The Orchard

We sometimes tend to equate Auto-Tune with the throwaway and inauthentic in pop, but it’s worth remembering that the technique is really just another tool in a singer’s arsenal, alongside more respectable standbys like melisma or smoke-cured gruffness. From Ryan Leslie’s malfunctioning seducer in “Gibberish” to T-Pain’s transhuman hedonism, Auto-Tune lends a futurist gloss to all sorts of classic song forms; perhaps Justin Vernon and Kanye West use it with the greatest impact, showing how… read more »

Give You the Ghost

Pitchy

They have a very unique sound that is infused in rhythmic tribal beats. The music is bathed in the nostalgia of yesteryear's gothic/industrial days. It really is quite difficult to pin their music down. Their ambient sound has a very smooth and warm feeling to it. They are lyrical without being too whimsy. If I were to compare it to another band, maybe White HInterland is what comes to mind. In short, it is some of the best music I have ever heard.

Superb Discovery

Jeepsman

This is a big surprise. No filler; all songs are interesting and unpredictable. Voice is excellent and not precious like so much twaddle being released these days. Instrumentation is full of muscle, yet all songs have melody and harmony. What a concept.

Great new album for 2012

Phonograph

This is a really great record with dual drumming, beautiful bass lines, and haunting vocals. If you were to ask me what Polica sound like - electronic Mazzy Star with Cranes thrown in for a twist. I found them while going through NPR music and listened to a few songs and interview. Check out Wandering Star and Amongster as they are wo thumbs-up songs to start with as an introduction.

Did you like GAYNGS Record?

MPLSWalkingWounded

I did, and you'll probably also like this. A lot going on here, real sonic loveliness. A band that takes full advantage of two drummers and might be Exhibit "B" in the case against auto-tuned vocals (Bon Iver being exhibit "A"). Channy's voice is super cool, no other way to put it. Czech it out, they have a very distinctive sound so you'll really dig it right away or you won't.
