Delicious drums, bass, and all else that trembles
This from Vandermark’s website: “Ken Vandermark wrote all the compositions with the idea of building the music from the perspective of the bass instead of the more conventional approach of composition construction, ‘from the top down’, as he puts it. ‘The three major influences I considered when putting the music together were the rhythmic ideas of James Brown, the dub ideas of Lee Perry and the collage ideas of Public Enemy.’ ” I'm personally a fan of John Herndon, Ken Vandermark, and Jeff Parker but this here is actually a double album, with only Vandermark and McBride as the consistent players on both discs. The first disc, recorded in Oslo, features Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on electric bass; Lasse Marhaug on electronics; Nate McBride on electric bass; Paal Nilssen-Love on drums; and Ken Vandermark with his tenor sax. The second disc, recorded in Chicago, features Johnny Herndon on drums; Nate McBride on electric bass; Jeff Parker on guitar; Ken Vandermark on tenor sax.
