The best of Longhair's '70s comeback albums
2009 | Label: Alligator Records

Recorded late in 1979 and released weeks after Fess’s January 1980 death, this is the best of Longhair’s ’70s comeback albums, a sublime mix of calling-card remakes (“Big Chief”), New Orleans faves more commonly associated with other artists (Fats’ “Whole Lotta Loving”) and blues and soul standards (“Cry to Me”). Every one of them is primo Longhair, with his rhumba-rocking piano licks as deep as the Caribbean, his bullfrog voice breaking masterfully and simpatico accompaniment from a three-piece horn section and Dr. John on guitar.

Terrific

'Fess in all his glory. Terrific band, excellent production, and of course those wonderful songs. I bought this original LP when it first came out and love it still. Ten stars.

Probably the best of all the many albums Longhair waxed during his comeback. A tremendously tight combo featuring three horns and Dr. John on guitar delightfully back the Professor every step of the way as he recasts Solomon Burke’s “Cry to Me” and Fats Domino’s “Whole Lotta Loving” in his own indelible image and roars, yodels, and whistles out wonderful remakes of his own oldies “Big Chief” and “Bald Head.” – Bill Dahl
