Party music with danceability and a hint of Southern twang
Label: DFA / Revolver

One of the firstU.S.indie bands outside ofNew YorkorL.A.to gain some degree of international attention, Pylon crossed the jittery art-school shimmy of Talking Heads with the angular, beat-driven post-punk of Gang of Four, minus the politics. For all their hard edges and anxiety, though, this is essentially party music; as varied as bands in theAthens,Georgia, scene were (the B-52s and R.E.M. don’t immediately seem like spiritual brethren), two things they all shared were danceability and a hint of Southern twang.

Despite her breathless delivery, singer Vanessa Briscoe lacks the pathos of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson (and the lyrics are essentially meaningless), but that’s not the point – Briscoe is a fourth instrument, forcing yelps and grunts through her body as if it were a tenor sax. This reissue includes an unreleased track (“Functionality”) and the entirety of a 1980 EP that included their crucial debut single, “Cool” b/w “Dub” (“Cool” was a minor club hit and was more recently covered by Deerhunter; “Dub”‘s main riff sounds cribbed from Gang Of Four’s “Not Great Men” except that it predates it). Later Pylon albums toned down the staccato energy for a more melodic jangle, but never matched the vitality here.

If you have the Pylon CD "Hits"

djgolf

(which has been out of print for a few years) then you already have all but 2 of the tracks here. Grab "Precaution" and "Functionality" if you're a completist.

Athens Royalty!

DKCOMET

This is one of the best bands to come out of Athens Georgia in the 80s. Never having the commercial success of REM or the B52s, Pylon was a driving force in the Athens music scene & the others would not have been able to break out without Pylon's shoulders to stand on. This is a seminal album from a seminal band. Find the Athens, GA documentary to find out more about them & the whole scene.

Who Are…The Coathangers

By Caryn Ganz, eMusic Contributor

The Coathangers couldn't play their instruments when they formed on a whim five years ago but now — somewhat to the dismay of singer/guitarist Julia Kugel — they're getting sort of awesome. "We're still kind of shitty. I tell myself that to keep the pressure off," she says on a break from her day job at a prom and bridal dress store. On their third disc, Larceny & Old Lace, the Atlanta quartet polish up… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Pylon’s first album, although it doesn’t contain masterworks on the level of the first single “Dub” or the later single “Crazy,” is considerably more consistent than the comparatively spotty Pylon!! and Chomp. This is Pylon at their purest, mixing the spartan angularity of Gang of Four with a playfulness missing from similar U.K. bands like the Au Pairs or the early Mekons (or indeed from Gang of Four themselves) as well as the irresistible danceability of their Athens, GA, compatriots the B-52′s. Yet Pylon never quite sounded like anyone except Pylon; their naïve instrumental style — guitarist Randy Bewley claimed that he didn’t even know the names of any notes or chords — and singer Vanessa Briscoe’s inimitable voice (moving from a flirtatious coo to a Meredith Monk shriek in the space of a line) and inscrutable lyrics are so idiosyncratic that they probably couldn’t sound like anyone else any more than another band could tackle a Pylon song. (Remember the botch R.E.M. made of “Crazy”?) Highlights here include the spirited opener “Volume,” the evocative instrumental “Weather Radio” (probably the prettiest song on the record), and Briscoe’s impassioned “Feast on My Heart.” Later pressings of this album replace the first track on side two, “Driving School,” with “Recent Title.” Both tracks are available on the 1989 compilation Hits. [DFA's 2007 remastered edition adds both sides of the band's first single ("Cool"/"Dub"), a B-side from the Cool 12" ("Danger!!) and a previously unreleased demo ("Functionality").] – Stewart Mason
