R. Carlos Nakai, Canyon Trilogy – Native American Flute Music
2002 | Label: Canyon Records / A-Train

The wooden flute is one of the most evocative and lyrical of the Native American instruments, and Nakai is its undoubted master. Pieces like "Inward Journey" are lushly meditative, and Nakai's solo instrument captures the space of the plains and mesas in his playing. His compositions, like "Creation Chant" and "Waking Song," remain very true to the heart of his people, making music that's a balm to the soul, lovingly performed and crossing a bridge between cultures.

Timeless

I owned 2 cassettes of this album, 1 CD and now 1 MP3 download. I gave a cassette to my mother to help her relax when she was so ill. R. Carlos Nakai is a master with his music and it's ability to calm the soul. I recommend it to anyone that needs some downtime, to listen, you will not be disappointed.

I just returned from an Arizona trip and wanted something to play as I watched all of my pictures. It was just what I wanted.

Terrific Tracks

The native american flute is one of the most beautiful instruments ever fashioned by man. It's simplicity has the ability to capture so many moods and themes. The treatment of the pure melodies with reverb was a bit distracting, but overall it is fantastic.

Awful

They added reverb to this. It sounds awful. Destroyed the Native American flute, it's natural beauty. So much like westerners to do this. Appropriating something and then making it suck

Music for Thanksgiving

By Robert Phoenix, eMusic Contributor

As the screws on the economy tighten during our approach to Thanksgiving, the annual football and tribal gorging takes on a decidedly different hue this season. In the past, we have taken the time, usually, to give thanks for our gains and our prosperity. This year, that gratitude becomes more vivid, standing out against the monochromatic landscape of failing businesses and skyrocketing unemployment. Much like when the pilgrims struggled for survival in the heart of… more »

World Music of the United States

By Chris Nickson, eMusic Contributor

World music in the United States? Well, yes. After all, it's famously a land of immigrants — even the Native Americans originally arrived from Siberia — and a melting pot of cultures and ideas. Those who came brought their music with them and added their own colors to the landscape of America. Perhaps the most famous examples are blues, gospel and jazz, with their direct connections to West Africa. But German farmers in South Texas… more »
