absolutely awesome

If you like the more instrumental aspects of Japan or Sylvian's later work, you will love at least 50% of the material here, and perhaps more. For me, this album distilled down everything I liked about Japan, removed everything I didn't like, and the result was 48 minutes of near perfection. The "They Say" review above is pretty laughable. I wonder who Mr. Erlewhine thinks the other members of Japan were besides Sylvian & Karn? The saddest part of this album is that the musicians were never able to work together again - even the making of this was pretty difficult by all accounts of the clash of personalities and ideas. Nevertheless, it gave us "Cries & Whispers" and "Pocket Full of Change", so the pain was worth it on some level.

They Say All Music Guide

Rain Tree Crow is the result of a collaboration between former Japan members David Sylvian and Mick Karn. Sylvian and Karn teamed with keyboardist Richard Barbieri and Steve Jansen, adding guitarists Phil Palmer and Bill Nelson for their self-titled debut. Like a mellower, new age-oriented version of Japan, Rain Tree Crow explores stark soundscapes that sound alternately beautiful and desolate. Although it is a bit too challenging to provide a good introduction to Sylvian and Karn’s music, the album remains fascinating for their fans. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
