Headbanging bounce as Dada Art
2005 | Label: Rhino/Warner Bros.

No sophomore slump for these guys: the Ramones' second release serves up another stack of brisk delights, following pretty much the same menu. Z-movie fun ("You Should Never Have Opened That Door," "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment"), comic violence ("Glad to See You Go," "You're Gonna Kill That Girl"), patriotism ("Commando"), tuneful teen dreams ("I Remember You," "Oh Oh I Love Her So," "Swallow My Pride"), a cool cover ("California Sun," delivered by the pasty-skinned New Yorkers free of irony and condescension). The absurdity of lyrics about kosher salami, pinheads and electro-convulsive therapy elevate the headbanging bounce to dada art. The 1976 concert recording added to the original 1977 album is a breathless rush punctuated by Dee Dee's trademark countdowns.

The Ramones, gave the fans what they wanted, and then some. The beauty of this gem..is it includes,Carbona,Not Glue...listed here as carbonera...hm...word has it The Carbona, company had no interest,in being associated with glue sniffing...this could be the reason...or...simply a clerical error...whatever..its here, and its tight.

One of the all time great albums from one of the all time great groups. Definitely download it if you don't have it. Yes, the real title may be Carbona Not Glue, the Ramones & label were prevented from using that title further due to a trademark issue.

Scene: Downtown New York Punk and Post-Punk, 1976-83

By Douglas Wolk, eMusic Contributor

There's always music going on in New York City, always young artists coming to town to seek their fortune. But from the mid '70s to the early '80s, a bunch of interlocking music scenes popped up around downtown Manhattan, where the rents were still low enough for young people to find a cheap loft to live in, make big noises and push their art as far as it could go. The center of the early New… more »

They Say All Music Guide

As fine as it is — and it’s a really entertaining record, especially in retrospect — the Ramones’ second album, Leave Home, isn’t as good as their first, largely because they no longer had the shock of the new. That can’t be said of Rhino’s 2001 expanded reissue of the record, since it trumps the reissue of Ramones in its bonus material. Where that record had eight bonus cuts, nearly all demos, this has a full 16-track concert recorded live at the Roxy in Hollywood on August 12, 1976. This is a superior bonus since even if it doesn’t have the breakneck quality of It’s Alive, it’s still terrific to hear the Ramones tearing through their set list at their prime. They’re not quite as fast or reckless as their reputation would lead you to believe — as soon as hardcore came around, they started seeming not nearly as fast — but it’s still a spirited, vigorous performance that makes this expanded edition quite special. Of course, in addition to the concert, Leave Home is given a 20-page booklet, filled with full artwork, lyrics, rare photos, and memorabilia, plus notes from Donna Gaines. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine
