What a shame...

dmaliniak

...that I missed out on DLing this before EMU went nuts. 12 downloads for two tracks that total 35 minutes?!? I don't think so. Better nothing.

Thanks Green Chimneys

JAZZWAGNER

Tom Lord Discography lists "Adrees" as "Andrees", but that disco is also not error free.

Please Note

GreenChimneys

The order of the tunes is incorrect: the label, not eMusic, made the error (according to an interview with Rashied Ali himself). The first track here is actually "Theme for Captain Black." The second track is not titled "Address," it should be "Adrees," which is the name of Rashied's son.

Fine and free

AllyD

An excellent example of early-70s free jazz. The combination of Ali's propulsive drumming and Ulmer's flinty chording works well. As well as Ulmer and Ali, these two tracks feature John Dana on bass and substantial solos from Earl Cross on trumpet and Bob Ralston on tenor.

They Say All Music Guide

This second release for the Survival label is an exciting effort, and a significant one as well, being an early free-jazz recording by James Blood Ulmer. Ulmer has lots of solo space on the two-side-long flights, and he sounds surprisingly harmolodic prior to his studies with Ornette Coleman. The music is potentially off-putting to listeners unfamiliar with Ulmer’s dissonant chord comping and the ebbs and flows of Rashied Ali’s sound/time keeping. However, the exuberant improvisations and seamlessly structured arrangements make this a truly invigorating set. – Wilson McCloy
