Red Hot Chili Peppers, I’m With You
2011 | Label: Warner Bros.

If the Red Hot Chili Peppers hadn’t lost longtime guitarist John Frusciante, they may not have had anything left to prove. Not after 25 years of documenting their steamy yet traumatizing adolescence (Blood Sugar Sex Magik) and middle-aged transcendence (Californication) under producer Rick Rubin’s watchful eye, and certainly not after the sprawling, two-disc Stadium Arcadium. But with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, the Chili Peppers deliver a remarkable album with a clear-cut caveat: embrace the fact that they’re growing up.

Traces of older melodies occasionally surface; Flea’s familiar, jittery bass drives opener “Monarchy of Roses,” and “Annie Wants a Baby” conjures memories of Stadium Arcadium‘s “Death of a Martian.” But Klinghoffer fills in on his own terms. As in the otherwise straightforward “Look Around,” his solos are brief and ethereal, mirroring the spirituality Kiedis sings about. He’s also expanded the group’s approach to songwriting — a number of songs on I’m With You incorporate both guitars and keyboards. Piano-pounder “Even You Brutus?” may mark a sonic sea change, but it complements Kiedis perfectly as he spits out spoken word like a newsboy yelling headlines.

Klinghoffer, who’s nearly 20 years younger than Kiedis, actually learned guitar by along to old… read more »

This one dum dum...

SHORTTBUSS

This new stuff is great! Back to some roots, but still funky. Some good tracks here if you listen. I don't understand what all the commotion has been about. Their former guitarist was something else, but he was not the group. Incidently Navarro was good with them too. It's good RHCP....period.

Some of us RHCP fans don't want them to grow up

It actually took me 3 to 4 listens of this album to actually feel a groove. As for their Warner Bros./Rick Rubin years, Blood Sugar Sex Magik is still their best album. I'm With You is definitely different, but for the better? Well, it is up for a Grammy. That doesn't mean it is better.

Maturity Plays and Sounds Swell

Ganesha

Never thought I'd see and hear a hard rock, alternative band age as well as the Chillis. Looser sounding, yet with a nice, mature age in marked contrast to other 'big name' groups like the Stones who too often sound calcified in the past. Funkier, too, if not immediately hit single oriented as in the past. A Deal indeed!

Great record

mattomega

Very well crafted, great Flea lines all over the place reflecting his interest in electronic and dance beats. Some really nice lyrical work by Kiedis, and Klinghoffer's ambient/atmospheric/and at times, funky, arrangements are such a nice departure after 11 years of Frusciante earnestness. Nice in '99, but got so tiring by '06.

Not the same old same old

Funny how changing a sound brings out the naysayers (Kid A or The Unforgettable Fire anyone?) I generally try to listen to a CD as if I had heard nothing prior to this point. I think this is fantastic music. I mean \"Monarchy of Roses\" is one of the best rocking songs out there. It doesn't all work but I think a great change of direction nevertheless!

Blaim the Peppers for inventing rap-rock.

infinitejest

Keep waiting for these guys to go away. I keep waiting for Limp Biscuit, Korn, ICP, and all the other late '90s trailer park thrash hop types who owe their vanished careers to the Peppers to go back to managing fast food joints and working the graveyard at the local plastics plant. Unfortunately, as the culture at large remains permanently stuck in 'rewind', all musical movements, including that odious pre-millenial mash-up of misplaced male aggression known as rap-rock, usually return for a second act and the big cash-in. Nostalgia equals profit. So I keep waiting for these guys to go away. And come back.

Adult Alternative Garbage

I am a long-time Chili Peppers fan. I think this album is terrible. Anthony Kiedis does not rap at all on the album. The new guitarist plays like a studio musician recording an album with Styx in the late 70's (which doesn't have to be a bad thing, but is in this context) . Flea contributes the most musically interesting pieces to the album, but it does not work with the cheesy guitars and over-produced drums (what happened Chad?). There is no edge to the album at all. The song writing has become boring since the departure of Friscante. The last 2 albums were also a departure from their 80's and 90's funk-punk sound, but were still good. This is commercial garbage for the masses, not for RHCP fans. I am truly disappointed and saddened to see one of my favorite bands lose their groove. Hopefully this band arrangement is temporary in the way that \"One Hot Minute\" was just a temporary sour blip in the history of the band. RIP Hillel and farewell John. You are certainly missed!

eMusic says it best: \"Please keep your comments to the recordings themselves, and be courteous and respectful. Thanks!\" Its such bs that this only has a 3 star rating. I bought this at a record store for 10 dollars, which I considered to be a great deal. If you would rather not pay $9.74, then that's your choice, but don't give this great album a bad rating until you've listened to it at least.

LOVE IT!!!

ROCKERRICK

THE ONLY THING I DIDNT LIKE WAS THE CHORUS IN "THE ADVENTURES OF RAIN DANCE MAGGIE"-HAVING SAID THAT, EVERY OTHER SONG HAS IT'S OWN UNIQUE GROOVE & FEEL TO IT. THE GUITAR WORK WAS UN NOTABLE BUT THATS O.K. 'CAUSE THE TIGHTNESS OF CHAD SMITH'S DRUMMING COUPLED WITH THE PRESENCE OF FLEA'S DOMINATING BASS & ANTHONY'S UNTOPABLE BOMBASTIC LYRICS LETS ME KNOW THEY STILL GOT IT!!!

Good album

petyrc

I like this album a lot. I think it has a number of good tracks on it. I like the new guitarist and like the way he plays the guitar. I actually think he's better then the last guiatist. And though I've always prefered the RHCP earlier sound from the late 80's when it was more raw, this ablum is worth buying...in it's entirety.
