BDUB

BonyToorer

I write my review later...BDUB! what can I say. I suppose education simply isn't what it used to be ;-) It's good that you're trying though. I definately do not pity you (that was a bit extreme from one of reviewers). You're on the right road. Now you must go to some live concerts, opera's ect. This kind of music needs to be allowed to evolve in your mind. It's not the quick fix of modern pop, rock, fusion ect (which I love too, for what it is when good). There is a lot for your mind to take in, but when you do, it's an amazing trip. You'll hear musical colours that you never thought possible...but really needs to be live. Listening to recording will then rivive it.

One of the Finest Lohengrin in history

ClassicalTerrorist

I cant tell you how sick I am of people like BDUB, and even worse(classical enthusiasts) who have no time for anything below audiophile quality. These are historical recordings, this one from 54 and is one of the finest Lohengrins on record aside from Kempe's, Kubeliks, and Cluytens. This is a landmark. To all who complain about the sound of historical recordings-----get over it or you are going to miss out on some of the greatest treasures music has to offer. Otherwise, stop complaining and listen to a track(.25 cents) and realize it is not up to your ignorant standards. I pity you. Cortot, Moiseiwitsch. Varnay. Krauss. AaAaaaah. So much you will never appreciate.

Great Performance

georges_melki

I don't know what pushes people like "Bdub" to download music they have never heard before(but who have "heard of Wagner"!Brilliant! Many others haven't, or maybe they think Richard Wagner is Robert's brother!), and which, let's say it bluntly, they don't understand!Let them leave such live recordings from Bayreuth, with all their coughs, to the ears of people("poor buggers", like Hexxed says!) who really appreciate them! Having said that, I loved this recording, and I strongly recommend it, not only because of Jochum's conducting, which is superb, but also for the singing of the main protagonists:Birgit Nilsson and Wolfgang Windgassen. And my dear Bdub, why don't you listen to something else?Besides, Hexxed, Jochum was known for many benchmark recordings apart from Bruckner's symphonies: Bach's St Matthew, Die Meistersinger, a Beethoven cycle with the Concertgebouw, to name but a few...

"Cough cough"

Bdub

I can't say much about this music. I'd heard of Wagner before downloading the first 2 discs of this album, but I couldn't remember ever hearing him outside of an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. And I still can't really comment on the music because whoever setup the mics for this recording seemed to be primarily interested in catching the audience noises instead of the music. On top of that, the orchestra seems to be performing at some sort of bronchial infection convention, because every 5 seconds you hear someone coughing a lung up. I mean, you can hear when someone in the audience shifts in their seat! Start somewhere else.

Exceptional and little heard recording

Hexxed

With the exception of his Bruckner cycle Eugen Jochum is/was possibly one of the most maligned and underestimated conductors of the 20th century. Indeed, I wonder how many people are even aware of this recording? To clarify, so you may have some idea of what you have here for a tiny number of dollars/pounds/euros: This the 1954 recording, live from Bayreuth. The cast includes - and I really want you to think about this -Wolfgang Windgassen, Astrid Varnay, (A very young )Birgit Nilsson, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Gene Tobin, Gerhard Stolze, Considering it's age and that this is a live recording, the recording quality is astounding. If your one of those that moan about Karajan's T&S - available here - because it doesn't sound like its been recorded in a studio and remixed by "Boys to Men", or something, then obviously keep away. However, if your one of us poor buggers for whom Wagner touches your soul even slightly, download now - lossless or not ;-P

Who Are…Liturgy

By Seth Colter Walls, Contributor

These are cynical times in the culture industry — so much so that, when a metal band from Brooklyn starts talking about transcendentalism and William Blake, your first response might be to process it all as a massive piss-take. But there's a sensible, sincere explanation. Turns out, Hunter Hunt-Hendrix was lured away from his composition studies in college by black metal's serious profile — one that's practically impervious to post-modern meta-snark. If you wanted to… more »
