A vibrant, unusual union of Latin cultures
2012 | Label: ATO Records

Rodrigo y Gabriela have become unlikely stars, a pair of Mexican metal guitarists who reinvented themselves as wild flamenco players after moving to Ireland. They’ve carved an admirable niche for themselves, with fiery playing and adventurous ideas that draw heavily on their rock past. Area 52 takes that basic formula one step further, teaming the duo with a 13-piece Cuban orchestra for a fresh look at some of their older material that offers a vibrant, unusual union of Latin cultures, an imagined place where Mexico, Cuba and the sense of old Spanish culture swirl effortlessly together.

Opener “Santa Domingo” sets the tone for much of the album; beginning with a heart-pounding riff, the duo crank up the tension until there’s an explosion of brass, all of the elements powered by the punch of the wah-wah pedal – almost a trademark of the couple these days – before sprinting to a breathless finish. The album is deliberately brash, laced with incendiary guitar work (listen to the electric playing on “Hanuman,” for example), and Cuban rhythms making a loud, colourful wrapper around the songs.

But it’s not all relentless; the group injects plenty of light and shade, as on “Diablo Rojo,” where flute and… read more »

Three gems (at least)

MichiganDAN

I first downloaded 11:11 and Santo Domingo. 11:11 was too electric and weird, so I paid the other little much attention. Since then, I listen and liked Santo Domingo a bunch, and so I just added Diablo Rojo and Tamacun. WOW!! Those two are terrific. I think the addition of C.U.B.A is great because it really freshens their otherwise impressive but repetitive acoustic sound.

Amazing!

Great album from Rodrigo y Gabriela. With them as always, great guitar work, but this time around they've got other instruments as well. It's great to hear them in a band setting, but nothing like the heavy metal band they used to be in before they became famous. This band's got horns, bass, drums, sounds a bit like Latin Jazz and a lot like Rodrigo y Gabriela

first party

Slamslamslam

There are parts of this which feel like the first time you went to a really great party. You couldn't believe people could have fun like this and the world is strange and new and hope is a charge of electricity. This is before you realize that music repeats old tricks, is often lazy and that popularity is no guarantee of goodness and world is not all swinging to one grand tune. No, this album is the moment before that. So these people can hit all the bases in a very short period of time, in a classical dynamic way which pop can't approach. But its still stuck in pop so the whole is not as good as the parts. The parts are great ; this is mammoth excersize in arrangement. This music is big and fun, tight and conscious but it wants to be deeper. It whispers possibility . And perhaps the next album will do that. But this one is a gorgeous confection. Which not to say its bad. Things get called confections when they are tasty. This is a great party album. And people will dance.

Q&A: Rodrigo y Gabriela

By Tad Hendrickson, eMusic Contributor

A pair of metalheads from Mexico City, Rodrigo and Gabriela became famous by taking that genre's highly technical approach to shredding and adapting it for the acoustic guitar. Over the course of four studio albums and a handful of live records, their style has grown more cunning and precise. They've even branched out into soundtrack work, scoring films as diverse and decidedly un-metal as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Puss in Boots. The… more »
