Better now i've cut the waffling

Really enjoying this album, even Hell's Angels (which has some great soloing on it - not sure whether that's Harper or not, but think John Squire may have paid it close attention). I don't think I would have continued listening to it so much without having cut the 3 or 4 minutes of him talking to the audience inbetween tracks 1&2, before hand I always had to skip on. Also cut the end of Hells Angels which has him joking around with his stoner friends, but it sounds like most would be recommended not even to download the song! Harper has an exquisite wobble in his voice on some of these songs, which normally I would find irritating, but his style is extremely affecting. Recently performed "I Hate the White Man" on Jools, which came across a bit heavy and strong for the scene, but I enjoy it more here now I can get to know it better. I like that he has political agenda's entwined with love songs.

I'll second that

I can't disagree with Anorak. Every song is a classic - with one exception. Hells Angels is completely incompatible with the rest of the album. It was deliberate apparently, an example of Harper's odd sense of humour.

Classic Harper

This is the real deal, the best lp he ever made. Ok, Hells Angels is pants-what do you expect with The Nice backing him. Other than that a fantastic album, doesn't get any better.

The likes of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Kate Bush all tipped their hat in his direction in his earlier years, while more recently Fleet Foxes, Joanna Newsom and Jonathan Wilson have gathered to touch the hem of his garment. Roy was born and raised in… more »
