Muhal Richard Abrams Updates the Big Band

By Kevin Whitehead, eMusic Contributor

Muhal Richard Abrams is likely best known as a driving force behind the hugely influential Chicago co-op the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), but he's also an underappreciated composer. They Say All Music Guide

This inventive drummer sets a few fires on this exciting disc. With full brass complement by David Sanchez on tenor, Kenny Garrett on alto and soprano, and Graham Hayes on flugelhorn and cornet, Roy Haynes lays a textured and complex rhythm through such tunes as Charlie Parker’s “My Little Suede Shoes” and Chick Corea’s “Mirror Mirror.” The closing drum solo proves without a doubt the melodic palette of percussion. The various band configurations, from drum solo to trio to septet, make for a varied and colorful album. – Tim Sheridan
