Caught between the blues and rock, Pleasure & Pain is an odd and appropriately-titled effort from Roy Rogers. He’s at his best when he’s turning out modernized Delta blues, either acoustically or on electric, but this album moves a little too close to blues-rock, as on the awkward “You Can’t Stop Now,” which features Sammy Hagar on vocals. The tendency toward overdriven blues-rock and funky workouts hampers the album, but there’s also some fine straight blues playing that makes the record worth a listen for longtime Rogers fans. – Thom Owens
