Left me cold
Jansons. The legendary Concertgebouw. What more could you ask for? How about some compelling conviction, of the kind that courses through every bar of Vanska's account of this glorious symphony on BIS? I really wanted to like (even love) this recording. But throughout, it left me with the impression that it was simply all in a day's work for this otherwise world-class orchestra and conductor. A perfectly serviceable interpretation, to be sure, but not one which ignites. Vanska, as mentioned, is superb - his reading with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra arguably the most emotionally engaging I've yet encountered. Even Bernstein on Sony or Sakari on Naxos seem preferable to this. Use the search facility here on eMusic, and spend your money more wisely elsewhere.
