Bassist Rufus Reid, pianist Kirk Lightsey and drummer Eddie Gladden (all three of whom worked together for awhile as Dexter Gordon’s rhythm section) are in fine form on this trio set. Reid contributed two of the songs, Lightsey brought one to the date and in addition the musicians play a rapid version of Herbie Hancock’s “One Finger Snap” while Oscar Pettiford’s classic “Tricrotism” becomes a solo bass feature for Reid. Since all three musicians have tended to be underrated through the years, this recording served as a excellent showcase for their often overlooked talents. – Scott Yanow
