If you can't say something good.......

Ole'rustyrocks

say nothing at all. The emotion, expression and understanding of her chosen work sounds way beyond her years, subtle arrangements enhance rather than interfear with Ruth's emotive voice. Aye lass it's reet grand!

Wow!

Macelington

Great voice, great songs - I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that this album puts her up there in the same league as the likes of Kate Rusby, Cara Dillon, Julie Fowlis, et al.

Impressive new singer

Ruth Notman is an 18 year-old from the English Midlands, who was recently a finalist in a BBC folk competition. She has a strong, clear voice, and an impressive command of the songs (four of which she wrote). Here she's accompanied by Saul Rose on melodeon (particularly effective in the swirling tracks 4 and 10), Hannah Edmonds on cello, Roger Wilson on fiddle, and Bella Hardy with harmony vocals. (I'm afraid a critical point for me was the frequent use of piano, which I found distracting - a pity, because she plays this herself and it is obviously a key choice in her arrangements. Others may appreciate this element more - but, in any case, the record is recommended for its lovely vocals and varied choice of songs)
