The Congo's rumba began moving around the continent in large part thanks to Ry-Co Jazz, which was put together in the late '50s by Henri Bowane, Franco's initial studio benefactor. They toured extensively and became popular in West Africa, and spent much of the late '60s and early '70s in the French Antilles. They kept an ear to America, too — check out the wonderful take-off on U.S. rock, “Twist with the Docteur.”
