After 25 years and $50 million-plus in sales, Sade Adu is virtually alone in the fact that she's still able to top the charts with virtually no widely-known autobiography. Her sixth album relies more on mood and traditional acoustic instrumentation than even its predecessors: Beyond the muted guitars that grind away, serving as a metaphor for the love wars depicted in the spellbinding title track, there are no earworms here, no ringtone-ready hooks. Instead, there are acres of longing and mountains of tenacity articulated with a tender yet firm touch. Defying fashion and the passage of time, Sade and her footmen of quiet storm soul stand their ground. Nothing else in the charts — or on this list — sounds remotely like them.
