Collaboration-crazy indie folkstress steps out on her own.
2007 | Label: The Echo Label / The Echo Label Limited

Miami-born, New York-raised Sarabeth Tucek may at first glance seem “just” another Dylan-doting folk-rock chanteuse, her soft vocal decorating pleasant, laid-back guitar music. Yet on closer inspection, there are twists and furrows here which reveal her unique background. Having sung with Smog and Brian Jonestown Massacre, she's happy to let a darker, indie haze creep into her ballads and color them with ambivalence. It's clear that, like Mazzy Star or Elliott Smith, Tucek is as influenced by the Velvet Underground as she is by '60s sweetness and light. Producers Ethan Johns (Ray Lamontagne, Ryan Adams, Kings of Leon) and Luther Russell (Richmond Fontaine) seem equally keen to steer this to a listenable — yet not lightweight — place. The ambition reaches full fruition on beautifully arranged, string-sodden closer “Home," which could almost be Karen Carpenter fronting Neil Young's Crazy Horse.

The bittersweet sighs of “Something for You” and the psalm-like “Stillborn” lead us in, eschewing any attention-seeking flash and oozing understated sincerity. Tucek rarely projects, preferring to mutter, but her voice revels in that rare ability to lure us in, making us curious to hear what's stewing amid those brooding, pained emotions. “Ambulance” is as sparse yet… read more »

Fantastic Find

jfstahl83

The best album I've stumbled across in years. Since downloading it a month ago I've probably listened to it about 20 times and haven't gotten tired of it yet. There are a few songs that are a little derivative in places, but her voice is great and all of the songs are compelling.

More like another Sarah . . .

. . . and not Aimee Mann. A couple of goodies here, though. Try "Holy Smoke" & "Blowing Kisses."

oh yes

I too hear Feist, Cat Power, Emilie Simon and yes the shadows of Joni Mitchel and Neil Young but this woman has her own style and her own songs and she sings and plays them just beautifully. A real "grower".

A really promising find

I can't disagree with any of the comparisons, but to that list I would add Aimee Mann - like Aimee she has a slightly vulnerable sounding voice, but also a reservoir of great tunes & a winning way with a powerchord. This is an excellent album, and a really great emusic find.

great album!!!

One of the best albums ever. You don't believe me? Liste to Ambulance, Stillborn or Hot Tears. If you like Regina Spektor, listen to Blowing Kisses. This is for people who like Cat Porwer, Beth Orton, Emiliana.

A promising debut

I've been looking forward to this album since hearing one of the tracks on a recent "The Word" freebie CD and it doesn't disappoint! A pure commanding voice with accomplished backing. I can almost feel the spectre of a mid seventies Neil Young looking over Sarabeth's shoulder on some tracks and what's not to like about that! Very Zuma-esque in places or should that be On-The- Beachy? I am slowly letting this album seep into my subconscious - try it!

The staff here at eMusic is made up, by and large, of passionate music fans. Everyone has their own pet band, their own taste, that they are not afraid to stand behind. With that in mind, last week we reached out to a handful of employees and asked them for their two favorite records on eMusic, and why. No further instructions were given. Below you will see what we got back, and we couldn't be… more »
