If this album proves anything, it's that God's a disco fan
2010 | Label: Polydor Limited / Downtown Records

Scissor Sisters' music has always dominated two epicenters of dance music: gay clubs and junior-high slumber parties. Performing live with everyone from Sandra Bernhard to the Muppets, they've been that rare rainbow-flag-waving pop group with a family-values seal of approval. But frontman Jake Shears claims the group's friendly-gay-uncle rep has left him feeling "neutered," so with Scissor Sisters' third full-length, they're leaving the warm fuzzies behind. Night Work is the sleaziest album they've ever made — and, not coincidentally, it's also their best. The lyrics are loaded with witty come-ons — "I've got your tail between my legs," "I want you to funk me/ Your battleship has sunk me," "Take me any way you want…In front of your parents?/ I don't care!" The music totally nails the sexy, seedy hedonism of '70s and '80s nightlife: "Harder You Get" winks at Iggy Pop's "Nightclubbing"; "Sex and Violence" sighs with the neon-light glamour of the Pet Shop Boys; "Running Out" reimagines the Cult's "Fire Woman" as the best aerobic workout ever. And, with electronic music guru Stuart Price producing, a newly inspired Shears sounds like he's ready for something new. "I'll take anything you give me/ 'Cause I know that God forgives… read more »

Solid disco

RenaissanceMan

Thank heavens these jolly folks have brought back respectable disco. Yes, I did just use the words "respectable" and "disco" in the same sentence.

Back to the good part of 80's music

Is it me, or does Whole New Way remind you just a little of George Michael I Want Your Sex? Guess it's just the rhythm. BTW GM is one of my faves so it makes sense I would like Scissor Sisters. It's just fun stuff.

Cool Mix

Here I am, almost 60 and I really enjoy listening to this album (and I'm not gay). Has a good rock beat with some techno/electric blended in. Found the lyrics interesting also.

Just good music

Watsinaname

In general I'm not much on disco/dance music, there's much more here beyond a dance beat.

Oh my

Fun, catchy, and raunchy. Sounds a little like Of Montreal gone clubbing.

Just fun pop music

frethepig

No, ernie-c from boca raton, fl, I may not still be playing this in 12 months. But I'll be playing it a bunch in between, i do believe. It's fun, disposable pop/dance music. How is that a bad thing? Besides, I've got LOTS of downloads from a year ago that I don't play.

Welcome back...

Love the first single and the rest of the tracks are solid too. Currently one of my favorite CDs.

Solid return

The Sisters are growing up, in a more interesting way than I would have expected. There's more tension now between their still-effervescent sound and the content of the lyrics. Not everything works brilliantly (the title track is among the weaker efforts) but those that do -- Night Shift, Invisible Light, and Fire with Fire -- deserve a deeper, fairer listen, not a humorlessly lazy dismissal.
