The Best Of The Pernice Bros

Nyabinghi

Even though the Pernice Bros have gone on to make some georgeous pop music there is something compelling about these tracks that the later stuff lacks. Part of it is the Death Ballad atmosphere of these cuts. Unfortunately there are licensing issues with the covers because their version of Wichita Lineman is perfect and I can't get over Where's The Playground, Susy? One of my personal faves.

Not the full albums

martyyu

Massachusetts is one of my favorite albums of all time. But these two are great precursors. Be warned that there should be 27 tracks in total, including a few great covers (Sonny & Cher, Olivia Newton John, etc.).

Intimate, Gorgeous and Essential

banbointe

Imagine The Eagles on valium -- except really good -- and you'll begin to get the flavour of this EXCELLENT music. A remarkable intersection of styles with the potential to be cheesy but - amazingly - they always go for the heart and, for my money, they get it. Intensely intimate, it sounds like they're sitting in a living room or kitchen playing these great songs because, essentially, that's exactly what they're doing. Great playing, great songs and loads of spirit make this an album to check out NOW!

wow

I found this accidently, when searching for more Pernice Brothers. I prefer it to them. More twangy, alt country like, than pop. Great sound. I am getting it so late, but better than never. Listen up and download away.

I Found them here...

I had (lame perhaps) never heard of the Pernice Bros.; I do remember the Scud Mtn. brouhaha; but I backed into these guys - I remembered the SCUD thing, but found Pernice Bros. via EMusic. Very happy with this and hope to see more as licensing allows. Thanks for this.

emusic yanked tunes

dprworld2

Once again Emusic has yanked the cover tunes from these albums. Dissappointing! I would still get all of these and Massachusetts. Then get all the Pernice Brothers. All good.

They Say All Music Guide

Pine Box and Dance the Night Away were the Scud Mountain Boys’ first two albums. Released on the tiny indie Chunk Records, neither album received wide distribution, so when the group signed with Sub Pop in 1997, the label negotiated for the release of the double-disc set The Early Year, which featured both albums plus a handful of rarities. While Massachusetts remains their most accomplished album, the music on The Early Year isn’t much weaker, and most alt-country fans will find the collection necessary listening. – Thom Owens
