Happily Divided

arpad

the best lowenstein song, and i feel the best sebadoh song. bakesale has skull, the best barlow. something about depressing music when it shows you hope that's so straightforward it can pull the heartstrings so tight it feels like you're flying, that's what everyone who hates this stuff doesn't realize.

Right CD at the Right Time....Amazing

ThrowingThings

"Soul and Fire" and "Happily Divided" are hands down, two of the best anti-love songs of all time. Well worth the download, or the price of the entire CD. If you've never heard Sebadoh, these two will show you what you've been missing. And for Christ's sake, if you are a long time fan and looking to download the a different version of S&F in the "Soul and Fire (Acoustic Demo)", be warned. Evidently, in the original version of the lyrics, Barlow was feeling a bit "wussy". I had to stop after the first verse for fear of this perfect tune being ruined for me.

A masterpiece!

I remember when I got this album almost 15 years ago. I was blown away by it. A couple of months later I saw them live at the Whiskey and they were absolutely fantastic. Lou Barlow was the spokeman of the lonely and sensitive crowd. Too bad that he now seems a lot happier, he was great when he was miserable and lonely.

The Making of Sebadoh’s Bakesale

By Michelangelo Matos, eMusic Contributor

Sebadoh's Bakesale couldn't have arrived at a more opportune moment. The Boston trio — singer-songwriters Lou Barlow (bass) and Jason Loewenstein (guitar) and drummer Eric Gaffney, replaced after the initial album session by Bob Fay — had begun with releases (many of them simply Barlow working alone on his four-track) on tiny labels like Homestead. They'd built up a word-of-mouth fanbase and a decent packet of press clips by the time Sub Pop signed them… more »

They Say All Music Guide

Bubble & Scrape is the last Sebadoh record to feature Eric Gaffney, and accordingly, his contributions are not so much songs as tantrums; blistering rants like “Telecosmic Alchemy” and “Elixir Is Zog” offer much in the way of dissonant noise but little in the way of substance. Still, the album has much to recommend it — not only does Jason Loewenstein emerge here as an increasingly adept songwriter, but Lou Barlow truly hits his stride: both “Soul and Fire” and “Think (Let Tomorrow Bee)” are sterling additions to one of the most impressive catalogs of love songs on the planet, while “Cliche” stings with bitter intensity. – Jason Ankeny
