Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Give the People What They Want
2014 | Label: Daptone Records / The Orchard

Sharon Jones’s latest, Give the People What They Want might’ve been her last: Initially announced last May, the release of her then-completed fifth studio album was put on hold while the 57-year-old singer battled cancer. Now she’s back, and in defiant, fighting form. Leading with a foreboding Spaghetti western flourish of tubular bells, “Retreat!” is her fieriest, feistiest song yet: “Taking you apart is my kinda fun/Count to three and then you better run,” she… read more »

Give the People What They Want - no doubt!

This album is a killer. I heard 'Stranger' on Boston's WERS and that was it. Clever horn arrangements and Sharon Jones is amazing.

Welcome Return to Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

Mike-E-Dread

I have been waiting for this release. Long time listener - 1st time review. It's so great to hear Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings again. This new album starts out very strong. The first three tracks are awesome. "Retreat!" is an awesome way to kick off the album. It is an anthem for every woman (or man) who feels they have been backed into a corner. It's also an anthem for Ms. Jones - who has gone public with her diagnosis and treatment of cancer (original release date for this album was May 2013). "Stranger To My Happiness" is a classic R&B testament to woman wronged by the man she loved. "We Get Along" is also a very strong entry. The rest of the album settles back in a steady R&B groove. The Dap-Kings put forth a stellar effort throughout the album. There is no doubt why this union with Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings has held up after five albums. They are great together and they have gotten better over the years. You won't be disappointed - that's a fact!

Done Me Right, Sharon Jones

It's like a long extension cord connects this album to R&B of yesterday, yet the lights are on Sharon 2014.

Sharon Jones is Gonna Be Just Fine

By Amanda Petrusich, Contributor

Sharon Jones paws through her handbag and emerges with a pocket-sized, navy-blue vaporizer that vaguely resembles an up-market ballpoint pen — the kind a mid-level executive might get as a retirement gift. "Amanda, look, no smell," she says, taking a tiny puff. I mumble that I'm vaguely familiar with the technology. What I fail to tell her is that I do not possess the balls to smoke weed in the middle of a half-empty pub… more »
