Her best yet, with resonant honesty and an expansive sound
2012 | Label: Jagjaguwar / SC Distribution

Tramp, the emotionally candid third album from Brooklyn-based songwriter Sharon Van Etten, is a slow burn: most of the songs capture the intensity of the moments before a quietly smoldering tree becomes a raging wildfire. Take the lead-off single, “Serpents,” which begins with calmly strummed yet unmistakably ominous chords. Then it explodes into something blazing and defiant: “You enjoy sucking on dreams,” Van Etten seethes, “So I will fall asleep with someone other than you.”

Since her 2009 debut Because I Was In Love – which featured largely acoustic guitar work and her beguiling, cigarette wisp of a voice – Van Etten’s sound has become more expansive with each release. Tramp isn’t just her best yet, it’s also her most densely populated, boasting an impressive roster of indie guest stars like Beirut’s Zach Condon, Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner (who contributes vocals on “Serpents”), avant-chanteuse Julianna Barwick, Walkmen drummer Matt Barick, and most prominently guitarist Aaron Dessner of the National, who also recorded Tramp in his Brooklyn garage-turned-studio.

Tramp may be an unflinching chronicle of a relationship gone sour (check out the exceptionally poignant “Give Out”: “It’s not because I always give up/ It might be I always give out”), but it’s at… read more »

This is right up there with the new Kathleen Edwards album as my favourite of the year so far. The last two songs are especially heart-wrenching.

I can't stop listening to this album. All the songs are amazing, but 'Give Out', is the most addictive song I have heard in a very long time.

I don't understand people! There isn't a bad track on this album. It's beautiful stuff. Give Out and Serpents remind me of one of my favourite bands - Midlake. I also love the track featuring Zach Condon. A great album, Sharon. Looking forward to your next one and I'll be there to see you if you come to Sydney.

Stunning. Go see her singing these songs live if you get the chance. She played Cargo here in London the other night and it was one of the best gigs I've seen. The band breathed even more life into these songs. Like Epic before it I can't pick a track on Tramp I don't like. There are a few tracks that show her folky roots from her demos and first album, but mostly it's about openning up her sound even more from the introverted Because I was in Love. She's always been a terrific songwriter, now she isn't holding back, being more outgoing and direct with her music. Download it. Now.

This is a real Yawn fest. One big run on sentance. She mimics many different singers which is okay, but this style has been done to death. This album is funeral not sure if you want to play before, durrrring or after. People who are depressed should run, and run fast, from this album.

'Serpents' has bite!

doriangreytoday

There are a few songs here you'll want to hear more than once. 'Give Out' is the kind of guy-bashing tale that I enjoy because it illustrates the shallowness of too many male/female relationships (but the 'put it on your knee' lyric is a bit clumsy). 'Leonard' has some great Jeff Buckley-esque vocal swoops. The whole band reminds me of Hope Sandoval with Mazzy Star (who should have been huge). But where Hope always hit the 'right' notes, Van Etten is often somewhat flat. I can envision this as a late-nite soundtrack as co-eds slag their hommes des jour. But there's no denying, 'Serpents' is a monster!

Q&A: Sharon Van Etten

By Christina Lee, eMusic Contributor

"Basically my songs are diaries," says Sharon Van Etten. "I analyze them and rework them in hopes people can relate to them." For Tramp, her third album and first for Jagjaguwar, Van Etten revisited songs she'd written before the release of her 2010 album, epic, songs that detailed her flight from Tennesse and a domineering boyfriend to her struggle to overcome that past as she began a new life in New York. While epic was… more »
