El Cojonu Speaks
Nice, ordinary voice. The kind you've heard before at other places and times. Voice doesn't stand out as unique. It could be anyone of a dozen singers. A journeywoman singer laboring in the Vineyard of Jazz.

An impressive debut from California singer-songwriter Shea Breaux Wells. Her impeccable vocals are lovely, pitch-perfect, and clear as a mountain stream, wrapping smoothly around her fresh, very poetic lyrics and unusual (yet memorable) melodies. This CD defies genre, as it incorporates elements of jazz (particularly with Noam Lemish's breathtaking piano solos) while staying firmly within the storytelling mode of Joni Mitchell. Warm, heartfelt, sometimes bluesy and sultry - as in the opening track Soothe Me- sometimes just downright gorgeous (as in the title track), Wells shows amazing artistry in song writing and also in arranging...I am a fan!
Shame about the lyrics. In places these are bad hippy schoolgirl poetry. Even so, Shea has a warm, sensuous voice which wraps around you, as does the music. I'd like to hear what she does next.
Jazz vocals, yes...but more of a cross of singer/songwriter and jazz vocals with jazz musicians. The first track 'Soothe Me' is a great opener. Check out 'The Candy Man' (track 6) for a completely orginal cover of this song. 'Blackbird' (track 8) is another orginal cover. But these are not the only good tracks. Be sure to check out all the tracks on this album. Lets hope eMusic brings us more material from Shea Breux Wells in the future.
