More interested in atmospherics than heart-pounding anthems
2012 | Label: Sub Pop Records

The Austin-based quintet Shearwater is not afraid to rock – Animal Joy opens with a buzzing electric guitar, and then charges into the propulsive standout “Immaculate” – but its new album overall is more interested in atmospherics than in heart-pounding anthems. (Remember how Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs felt when it first came out, with all those moody songs and only a couple cathartic blowouts? This is like that.) Frontman and noted bird enthusiast Jonathan Meiburg… read more »

My first Shearwater album, and I love it!

Whimper

This is incredible. The lead singer has a wonderful and unique voice that reminds me of both Springsteen and Lightfoot, and over such well written and played songs. I'm recommending this to my friends right away.

Animal Joy- Breathtaking

georgayne

This was a departure from previous albums (all of which I adore as well) and my first reaction was "huh, so they are delving into rock now". But...it deserves a second listen, and the simplicity, crispness and talent just bubbles up. This is not an attempt to be "rock and roll" like the masses, but to showcase the depth of talent, incredible lyrics and the joy of performing. It has earned a spot of honor in my playlist and suspect I will hear something new with every listen.

A great Band - Jonathan's voice is amazing

amosandy33

I like just about everything Shearwater does. Their music is original, the band is tight and Jonathan's voice has such a unique and beautiful range. I agree with the previous reviewer about this album being of a more rock and rhythm driven style than their previous works. I myself tend to enjoy their softer songs but there is something for everyone here! I give it 4 1/2 stars.

Animal Joy- Solid entry for an incredible band

shopcmd

I can't stop listening to this album. While this style of this album diverges from Shearwater's previous efforts for a more rock and rhythm-driving style, there is enough here that is familiar to old fans yet remains a refreshing evolution. And as always Jonathan's vocals and lyrics are stunning.

Who Are…Dry the River

By Annie Zaleski, Contributor

The five members of Dry the River cut their teeth playing in punk bands in the south of England. However, even after vocalist Peter Liddle moved to London to study medicine, he never lost his passion for music; in fact, the people he turned to when it came time to record a demo were those same mates from his hardcore days. Much to the young band's surprise, things took off fast: Formed in 2009, they… more »
